Saluting traditions have evolved somewhat over the years and differ from area to area. The notes below reflect a current (as of the time of this writing) collection of the protocols for saluting, 'in general', within Atlantia. For information on other Atlantian traditions, see the Traditions page.

Who salutes and when?

These can vary from marshal to event to region. In some places, it is standard to do a full round of salutes before each and every bout. In other places, you may give full salutes in the first round of a tourney, later 'remembering honors previously given'. In still other situations you may have a mass salute and then just move on into the fights. It really does vary by the situation. If you are a marshal working the field then you should receive instructions from the discipline marshal in charge for how they would like the field to run.

Who do you salute?

  1. Always the Crown, in the general direction of the Crown (or their thrones)
  2. Always the sitting Baronage, in the general direction of the Baronage (or their thrones)
  3. Usually to 'The one who inspires you this day'
  4. Usually to 'Your noble and worthy opponent'
  5. Usually to 'The wonderful crowd here assembled'

Who calls for the honors?

This depends on the tournament being run. Often times it is the marshal running the specific list that will perform this function before each fight but it is not uncommon, especially for a high profile list like Crown or a Pas, for a dedicated voice Herald to perform this function. Heralds, please leave the list immediately upon completing your duty as herald.
