Feast-toasting traditions have evolved somewhat over the years. The notes below reflect a current (as of the time of this writing) collection of the protocols for toasting at feast. For information on other Atlantian traditions, see the Traditions page.

Who does the toast and how do they know?

The toast is 'generally' performed by the highest ranking person in the Order of Precedence (OP) in the room that is NOT at High Table. This may change. Maybe the person highest in the OP can't, or doesn't want to, do the toast for some reason. Then you just figure out who the next person in line is and go talk to them.

When does the toast happen?

Toasts should typically happen around the mid-first course. Wait for the food to come out. Let everyone get settled, comfortable, fill their glasses, etc. Then the senior OP member can call for attention and toast the following.

Who do you toast and in what order?

  1. Always toast the Crown first. Whether they are there or not.
    1. IF you have visiting Royals, then it is appropriate to show them the honor of a toast as well
  2. Sitting Baronage in their own lands.
  3. Their Royal Highnesses. Whether they are there or not.
    1. IF you have any visiting Baronage, then it is appropriate to show them the honor of a toast as well
  4. The Feast Crew for being awesome. (optional but nice)
  5. A virtue or theme for the event. (honor, chivalry, kindness, absent friends, etc) (optional but can be meaningful)

So, depending on where you are and how many people you have visiting you could have as few as 2 or as many as 7 different toasts to go through.

Other considerations

  • Yes, technically a Territorial Baronage outranks Their Highnesses 'IN THEIR OWN LANDS'. That wasn't a mistake of order.
  • Did you know that it is considered a faux pas to remove your coronet before the Crown does? Did you also know that many Crowns will wait for the toast to remove their own? Did you also, also, know that those things can be heavy and uncomfortable and giving the toast mid-first course is doing them a kindness? True story.
