Epy Pengelly, Armiger (they/them)

General:

Epy lives in Highland Foorde. You can find them most often with the equestrians, but they also greatly enjoy performing music in ensembles. They are a member of Laydes Fayre (since Fall 2019), and likes to play in the pit band for dances/balls when able. Currently serving as the Minister of the Lists of Highland Foorde, Epy also tries to stay active as an Equestrian Marshal or Autocrat of an event.

Epy's name came from a lost bet, and they saw it through by registering the name. It is a Cornish name, from the 10th - 12th c. They do not strictly adhere to this region or time period for a persona, but do tend to dress in the looser-fitting clothes of this era.

Music: They play the tenor viol da gamba, viola, violin, and sings.
Particular interests include: Gothic architecture (particularly cathedrals), late medieval English literature, equestrian things
Things they want to learn more about: clothing, naalbinding, weaving, metal-working/blacksmithing, non-Western cultures
Court preferences: Prefers small courts (as small as possible), virtual awards okay

The Medieval Horse Horses were the machines of the medieval world. Whether as a luxury item for knights and other nobility, or necessary for the working class, horses were a vital part of medieval life. What set apart a knight's destrier from a lady's palfrey, though? And what exactly was a workman's horse? Do these classifications still exist today? Come find out! (None)

Typecasting in the Canterbury Tales Appearance is everything in medieval literature. Chaucer wanted you to have first impressions of his characters-- first impressions that were right. Come find out why it mattered that the Wife of Bath had "hosen...of fyn scarlet reed" and she was "gat-tothed", or why we should care that Chaucer mentioned the Squire's clothes were "Short was his goune, with sleves longe and wyde." Together we'll pick apart some of the pilgrims' first appearances in the Prologue and their introductions to learn about the characters before they even get into their tales and we learn more than we ever wanted. Psycho Horses! A case study of the British Library’s Psychomachia In the British Library there is a 10thc illuminated manuscript of the Psychomachia, a poem of almost 1000 lines by the 5thc Roman poet Prudentius. The Psychomachia is describes the challenges of vices and virtues for the human soul in a battle style. This manuscript has very interesting illuminations of horse barding that I have yet to see anywhere else and want to examine closer — with you!— as I contemplate recreating it for an eventual persona pentathlon. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba A Mosque-Cathedral? This classification is a bit strange to wrap one’s head around, despite being exactly what it sounds like. Built like a Matryoshka Doll, the center of the building is purportedly a Roman temple, then expansions upon expansions have been added on over the centuries in different styles to create a sense of authority and legitimacy through the use of architectural elements. Mainly the relevant expansions made by the Islamic rulers in the medieval period will be examined, but we’ll take time to look at some other expansions briefly, too. The choice of location of the Mosque of Córdoba will also be examined. Officially the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Catholicism, this building has served many communities over its lifetime, and continues to be a cultural and physical landmark in Córdoba. Meet The Horses

Equines are a staple of the historic world, but now are somewhat of a novelty. That being said, the equestrians of Atlantia love showing them off and introducing people to them! Do you want to meet our horses? Feel free to come ask if you can be introduced to the right animal-- some of them are more shy around new people, whereas others are friendlier. At events we try to set up day shades for people to sit under and watch our activities in relative comfort. Please join us!

Leo:

Epy and Leo, Hastilude at the Hollow 2018

Leo is an ex-racehorse, and likes to get into mischief! You are more likely to meet him at an overnight event; he likes having a chance to settle into somewhere new before working, so day events are hard for him. He is a thoroughbred, and his favorite treats are anything crunchy (apples, carrots, etc).

Libby:

Epy and Libby, Battle on the Bay 2017

Libby is a quiet Morgan pony who likes to meet new people! She is a bit reserved, and loves horse treats more than apples.
