Introduction
Lord Malcolm de Moffat is an active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism whose SCA career has included service and participation in both Atlantia and Drachenwald. He has served as a herald, armored combatant, Baronial Champion, seneschal, and longtime member of the 14th-century martial and clothing community. His SCA path has moved through several homes, including Caer Mear, Knight’s Crossing, Stierbach, Turmstadt, and Vielburgen.
Malcolm’s interest in medieval history began in 1992 while he was a student at Old Dominion University. During that time, he began studying medieval history and experimented with making handmade mail using a hand drill and metal dowel. His original 16-gauge mail coif remains one of his earliest pieces of medieval craftsmanship.
Not long afterward, Malcolm became associated with a Norfolk-based steel combat group known as The Free Companions. Through that group, he first learned of the SCA and became interested in armored combat, historical weapons, and armor construction. Although his early interest faded for a time, his swords, daggers, axes, and armor waited for more than a decade before he returned to the medieval world and gave the SCA his first serious look.
There are four distinct phases of Malcolm's SCA career.
1st Atlantia (2004 - 2008)
1st Drachenwald (2009 - 2018)
2nd Atlantia (2018 - 2021)
2nd Drachenwald (2021 - Currently)
Persona
Malcolm de Moffat portrays a 14th-century man-at-arms from the Scottish lowlands near Dumfries. A minor noble by birth and a professional soldier by necessity, Malcolm is imagined as a man who sought opportunity beyond Scotland, fighting in France for pay, reputation, and glory.
He is closely associated with the 14th-century martial and clothing traditions of Atlantia, including the group informally known as the 14th Century Mafia. His preferred impression emphasizes the appearance of a well-equipped man-at-arms: fine clothing, visible heraldry, and a carefully maintained harness.
Although Malcolm’s primary persona is 14th-century, he has also appeared publicly in Tudor clothing of the 16th century and Norse-inspired clothing of the 10th century.
Despite his fine clothes and polished armor, Malcolm is quick to remind others that looking splendid and fighting well are not always the same art.

Marshal Accomplishments
During his first Atlantian phase, Malcolm quickly became active in the kingdom’s martial and service communities. In his first year, he traveled to more than twenty events and received his Award of Arms from Their Majesties János I and Rachel I. He became Lord Malcolm de Moffat during the same period in which he volunteered to serve as Baronial Herald for the Barony of Caer Mear.
Malcolm was initially squired to Sir Bryce de Byrum and joined the Hôtel de Byrum. At the Tourney of Ymir in AS 39, he advanced to the semifinals for the first time, marking an early milestone in his armored combat career.
He fought alongside his knight and squire-brothers at the first Challenge of the Heart Tournament in AS 39 and was later invited to fight beside his knight in the Second Combat of the Thirty at Pennsic War 34. At that event, he was awarded a knight’s chain by a knight of the East in recognition of his prowess on the field.
In AS 40, Malcolm took the Cross and left for the crusade in Babylon, where he spent four years in service. That period marked a long absence from his home kingdom and became part of the larger story of his SCA persona and martial history.
In AS 44, weary from years of heat and sand, Malcolm sailed for the port of Vielbergen in the Barony of Knight’s Crossing, Drachenwald. Although he first intended to remain only a year, his sojourn lasted far longer. His first Drachenwald phase allowed him to serve and fight among the lords and ladies of that kingdom for nearly a decade.
During this time, Malcolm served as Baronial Champion for the Baron of Knight’s Crossing. He fought in the first Tourney des Hertzwald as a tenant and later appeared as the Red Knight during Tourney des Hertzwald II and Tourney des Hertzwald III.

In AS 50, Malcolm moved east to the Canton of Turmstadt, where he served as man-at-arms to Duke Thorvaldr Tvisvar Brottinn. He traveled with the Duke’s household to Gulf Wars, where he fought alongside his former squire-brother, then Prince William Thomas of Atlantia. He also fought at Drachenwald 20 Year, where he met Lord Frakii of Meadowmarsh in a memorable deed of arms, losing the bout 2–1. During this period, Malcolm also served as Seneschal of his home canton.
In AS 53, Malcolm returned from Drachenwald to Atlantia, settling in the Barony of Stierbach. During this second Atlantian phase, he lived in the eastern hills of the barony without a formal household affiliation. At Rip Rap War III in AS 55, during the reign of Christoph II and Adelhait II, he again bent the knee to the Crown of Atlantia.
In AS 55, Malcolm sailed once more from Atlantia to Drachenwald and returned to the Shire of Vielbergen. He now resides in the manor of Schopp, where he lives more quietly, having seen enough war and fighting to fill ten lifetimes.
Sickened by years of heat and sand, Malcolm, in AS 44, sailed for the port of Vielbergen in the Barony of Knight's Crossing in Drachenwald, home of a myriad of lords and ladies from all over the Knowne World. This began his 1st Drachenwald phase; he wished to stay ostensibly for only a year but his sojourn lasted much longer and enabled him to serve several different Lords and Ladies in that gorgeous kingdom for over ten years. Malcolm served as the Barononial Champion for the Baron of Knight's Crossing; he fought in the initial Tourney des Hertzwald as a tenon; he fought as the 'Red Knight' on two different occasions during Tourney des Hertzwald II, Tourney des Hertzwald III. In AS 50, Malcolm moved east to the Canton of Turnstadt and had the pleasure of serving as Man-at-Arms to Duke Thorvaldr Tvisvar Brottinn, traveling with the Duke's household, to Gulf Wars (where he fought along with his once Squire-Brother, then Prince of Atlantia William Thomas), and Drachenwald 20 Year (fighting a powerful duel with Lord Frakii of Meadowmarsh losing the heroic deed 2-1), as well as serving as Seneschal of his home Canton.
In AS 53 he sailed from the port of Poldershot in Drachenwald for the Barony of Stierbach in Atlantia, beginning his 2nd Atlantian phase. Lord Malcolm settled in the eastern hills of the Barony but had no household affiliation. It was at Their Majesty Christoph II and Adelhait II Rip Rap War III in AS 55 did he bent the knee again to the King & Queen of Atlantia.
In AS 55 Malcolm sailed from the Atlantian port of Ursus Bay to the port of Poldershot in Drachenwald and settled in the hills of the Shire of Vielbergen. Currently, Malcolm is a recluse in his manor of Schopp, having seen enough of war and fighting to occupy ten lifetimes.
