Introduction
Eldred's introduction to the SCA was at a few events in the mid-1980's in the Barony Marche of the Debateable Lands where his interest in archery and heraldry were sparked. In the early 1990s, he began attending events in Atlantia. Additional arts and skills began to draw his attention--specifically: calligraphy, illumination, and brewing. Calligraphy and Illumination led to heraldry. Heraldry led to architecture and stained glass. Architecture led to an interest in period furniture and woodworking. Woodworking led to game boards and thus, to games and numismatics. In short, every dive into a particular art turns into a sideways exploration into other arts.
Persona
Eldred Ælfwald is a 12th century itinerant scribe living near Chester on the Welsh border.

Corvus Rose Window This was a long term heraldic display project for House Corvus based on the rose window of the north transept of Notre-Dame de Paris. The order in which the heraldry is displayed is from the center out in order of registration of the first 20 or so members, then by when the individual joined the household or when they registered their armory while in the household. This is the third heraldic rose window Eldred created-the first two were for the Cantons of Falconcree and Cyddlain Downs. |

Nottinghill Coill Chairs of State Magnus Iain Craig (who is a master cabinetmaker by trade) provided the mentoring and some of the joinery skill, but the vast majority of the work was completed by Eldred over several months (700 hours total). The design is based on the "Glastonbury chair" but with some hidden modern upgrades and redimensioning from the original plans. The chair is completely made from ash and finished with a ground walnut stain and sealed with three layers of hand-rubbed carnuba wax and linseed oil mix. |

Atlantian Pennsic Gatehouse Griffith Jenner provided the space and building expertise, Caelen Hood provided additional muscle and hands. Eldred helped design and build the structure, then fabricated all the doors, windows, and the massive red oak gates for this project. It was packed flat onto a trailer, transported and assembled on-site at Pennsic. |

Golden Dolphin for Baroness Ia A Byzantine-style Golden Dolphin scroll for Baroness Ia Anna Kazimov. The inspiration is from a 6th century Byzantine Canon table. The sea lions are a direct reference to Ia's heraldry. |

May 2021 Crown Tournament Shield Tree To support the visual presentation of Atlantia's 80th Crown Tournament being livestreamed, this Tournament shield tree was inspired by the Luttrell Psalter. Eldred and other scribes (Amelia Rosa, Adelaide Half Pint, Natalya Susaninna zhena Medveknikgoteva) painted the heraldry and the images were scanned and enlarged to place on the tree. |

Pelican for Lucien de la Rochelle One of Eldred's larger pieces, it is inspired by a bestiary, and includes an encyphered message for Lucien hidden in the scales of the sea-dog's tail. | ||
Spring Crown Tournament 2021: Procession ![]() |
Crown Tournament Procession Due to a very constrained timeline for Atlantia's Crown Tournament, the normal Procession and presentation of combatants and consorts was not done. In order to provide context and pageantry for the populace who watched the tournament being livestreamed, Eldred and Ealdthryth produced a video presentation of the candidates and their heraldry. |
