Feast-toasting traditions have evolved somewhat over the years. The notes below reflect a current (as of the time of this writing) collection of the protocols for toasting at feast.

= Who does the toast and how do they know? =
The toast is 'generally' performed by the highest ranking person in the Order of Precedence (OP) in the room that is NOT at High Table. This may change. Maybe the person highest in the OP can't, or doesn't want to, do the toast for some reason. Then you just figure out who the next person in line is.

Toasts should typically happen around the mid-first course. Wait for the food to come out. Let everyone get settled, comfortable, fill their glasses, etc. Then the senior OP member can call for attention and toast the following.
