Dame Cyneswith the Quiet, Cyneswith of Lost Forest, Cyneswith inghean Domhnall

Cyneswith is a scribe, youth officer, and an A&S enthusiast. She is a second-gen SCAdian, and went to her first event at age 3. She has been sewing since age 6 and doing calligraphy since age 7. She enjoys C&I, cartography, wood-working, embossing, paint-making, cooking, brewing, wild edible plants, and research. She also raises period-breed chickens. She sews when she must. Encouraging others in pursuing arts and science is her primary goal. She is a former archer, former heavy fighter, and currently learning rapier fighting. Cyneswith runs an (almost) weekly scriptorium/glass workshop.

Cyneswith was born in 1285 AD to a lesser Scottish noble, Domnall, and an English mother. Her mother died in childbirth, and her dying wish was to name her daughter after the patron saint of the abbey where she was raised. Her father traveled a lot and was mostly mystified by what to do with a child, so Cyneswith mostly did as she pleased so long as it didn't cause complaints. What pleased her was to learn and she developed a hodgepodge of unrelated skills. Cyneswith is a proud Scot with ties to the French court and a calculating disdain for the English.

Costume and Clothing, or garb, is a far reaching field, tied closely to textile arts and embroidery. For Arts and Sciences Judging criteria, clothing is broken down into three time periods, of early (pre-1350 CE), middle (1351-1450 CE), and late (1451-1600 CE) period. Sources for costuming are varied, ranging from illuminations and text descriptions to archaeological finds and tomb effigies.

Early period clothing is delineated by geometric patterning, with many rectangles and triangle. T-tunics and apron dresses are some examples.

Middle period clothing had constructed patterning. Examples are cotehardies, houppelandes, and sideless surcoats.

Late period clothing is complex in construction, including High Renaissance, Tudor, Elizabethan, Russian Renaissance.

Accessories have ties to further fields. Cordwaining (or shoe-making) is field of leather-working, while temple rings, buttons, and bells are all part of metal casting.

Illumination is the art which decorates medieval documents, including initials, marginalia, illustrations, and cadels. Technically, illumination refers only to art which is ornamented with gold or silver leaf, but the term is usually used in a broader sense. There are many broad styles, and many approaches to creating illumination.

Pigment is mixed with binder to produce paint. Common binders of the era are egg-white glair and gum arabic, both with a touch of honey to improve the flexibility of the paint. The preferred paint of most modern scribes is gouache and, to a lesser extent, watercolor, both of which have gum arabic as the primary binder. The two paint types vary only by the addition of white pigment in gouache to aid in opacity. Gum arabic based paints have the advantage that they can be quickly reconstituted, and can be left on a palette for a long time in an immediately usable form. Glair paint, however, has short period of usefulness, quickly gumming up a paint brush, and must be mixed in very small batches for immediate use.

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with a needle and thread. Embroidery ranges from simple decorative stitching at hemlines or mended areas to tapestries like the Opus Anglicanum.

There are two main categories of embroidery, and many more subcategories. Free embroidery is embroidery done without counting threads underneath. Counted embroidery involves each stitch covering a specific number of threads. Canvaswork is a type of counted embroidery that involves working on a mesh-like fabric, with stitches primarily made at natural openings in the fabric.

Crewelwork is surface embroidery using wool, and is often used as a type of needle-painting. The Bayeux Tapestry is the oldest intact example of crewelwork, with wool threads worked over a linen base.

Goldwork often falls under free embroidery, and is usually achieved via surface couching (with gold thread primarily staying on the top of the fabric, and stitched down with a less expensive thread.) The Opus Anglicanum contains goldwork.

Beaded embroidery is embroidery with beads. This ranged from small clusters of beads scattered across a garment to objects being encrusted with beads.

Smocking allowed hems to expand without the use of buttons or lacing before elastic.

Drawn thread embroidery is a type of counted embroidery where the threads of the base fabric are stitched together to form patterns. Simple drawn thread embroidery can be seen in hem stitches, while Reticella lace is also achieved with drawn-thread embroidery.

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing. Forms and materials vary widely by region, but European calligraphy is the most frequently seen in these Current Middle Ages. Calligraphers do not use fonts - script or hand to refer to the set forms of letters in a given style.

Most European calligraphy was made with pen and ink. Quill pens were the most commonly used and were primarily made with goose feathers. Swan feathers were useful for larger lettering, and crow quills were useful for particularly fine works like maps. Regardless of the type of feather, the quill is cured, then formed with a small, sharp knife. Metal broad-nib calligraphy pens are more commonly used now, as making and maintaining quill pens is an art in its own right.

Parchment is the most common substrate, with paper use becoming more common towards the end of the period. Vellum is a sub-type of parchment, referring specifically to baby or uterine animal skins (and specifically calfskin, by strictest definitions), resulting in finer surfaces. Calf, sheep, and goat were the most commonly used types of parchment, with the preferred type varying by region, but other skins were also sometimes used.

Guidelines can still be seen on many documents, whether with silverpoint, pin pricking, or other methods.

Some of the most common types of European calligraphy are related to either insular and blackletter scripts. Blackletter (sometimes called Gothic) includes Textura, Rotunda, Bastarda/Batarde, and Fraktur.

Cyneswith the Quiet, Cyneswith of Lost Forest, Cyneswith inghean Domhnall

Cyneswith is a scribe, youth officer, and an A&S enthusiast. Encouraging others in pursuing arts and science is her primary goal.

== Persona ==
Cyneswith was born in 1285 AD to a lesser Scottish noble, Domnall, and an English mother. Her mother died in childbirth, and her dying wish was to name her daughter after the patron saint of the abbey where she was raised. Her father traveled a lot and was mostly mystified by what to do with a child, so Cyneswith mostly did as she pleased so long as it didn't cause complaints. What pleased Cyneswith was to learn. Thus Cyneswith developed a hodgepodge of unrelated skills. Cyneswith is a proud Scot with ties to the French court and a calculating disdain for the English.
