The Codex Atlantia is a long term project for Mécène [[Etienne Le Mons d'Anjou]].
This concept is an Atlantian version of the Codex Manesse (AKA: Große Heidelberger Liederhandschrift or Pariser Handschrift). This project will combine Etienne's interests of poetry, calligraphy, illumination, heraldry, and book-binding.

== Inspiration ==
The Codex Manesse is an anthology of the works of a total of about 135 minnesingers of the mid 12th to early 14th century. For each poet, a portrait is shown, followed by the text of their works. The entries are ordered approximately by the social status of the poets, starting with the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI, Kings Conradin and Wenceslaus II, down through dukes, counts and knights, to the commoners. Most of the poems are Minnesang, but there are also other genres, including fables and didactic poems. The oldest poets represented in the manuscript had been dead for more than a century at the time of its compilations, while others were contemporaries, the latest even late additions of poems written during the early 14th century.

In the portraits, some of the nobles are shown in full armor in their heraldic colors and devices (therefore with their faces hidden), often shown as taking part in a joust, or sometimes in single combat with sword and shield, and sometimes in actual battle. Some images are motivated by the biography of the person depicted, but some designs just draw their motif from the poet's name (thus, Dietmar is shown riding a mule, since his name can be interpreted as meaning people's horse), while others draw on imagery from their lyrics (Walther von der Vogelweide is shown in a thoughtful pose which exactly matches the description of himself in one of his most famous songs).

The compilation of the codex was patronized by the Manesse family of Zürich, presumably by Rüdiger II Manesse (born before 1252, died after 1304). The house of Manesse declined in the late 14th century, selling their castle in 1393. The fate of the codex during the 15th century is unknown, but by the 1590s it had passed into possession of baron Johann Philipp of Hohensax (two of whose forebears are portrayed in the codex, on foll. 48v and 59v). In 1604, Melchior Goldast published excerpts of its didactic texts. After 1657 it was in the French royal library, from which it passed to the Bibliothèque Nationale, where the manuscript was studied by Jacob Grimm in 1815. In 1888, after long bargaining, it was sold to the Bibliotheca Palatina of Heidelberg, following a public subscription headed by William I and Otto von Bismarck.

The first critical editions of the Codex Manesse appeared in the early nineteenth century. The codex is frequently referred to by Minnesang scholars and in editions simply by the abbreviation C, introduced by Karl Lachmann, who used A and B for the two main earlier Minnesang codices (the Kleine Heidelberger Liederhandschrift and the Weingartner Liederhandschrift respectively). Two leaves of a 15th-century copy of the manuscript, called the Troßsche Fragment (Tross Fragment), were held in the Berlin State Library, but went missing in 1945.

== Project Overview ==
Etienne plans on first writing approximately 135 poems based on peers in Atlantia who have inspired him or taught him valuable lessons. The types of poetry will be a variety of different documentable pre-seventeenth century styles.

After the poetry is complete, Etienne plans on illuminating a page with each poem and including the individual's heraldry within the design. After the scribal portion is complete, the works will be bound into a book with the poems in the order of precedence of the individuals at the time of binding.

The Codex Atlantia is a long term project for Mécène [[Etienne Le Mons d'Anjou]].
This concept is an Atlantian version of the Codex Manesse (AKA: Große Heidelberger Liederhandschrift or Pariser Handschrift). This project will combine Etienne's interests of poetry, calligraphy, illumination, heraldry, and book-binding.

== Inspiration ==
The Codex Manesse is an anthology of the works of a total of about 135 minnesingers of the mid 12th to early 14th century. For each poet, a portrait is shown, followed by the text of their works. The entries are ordered approximately by the social status of the poets, starting with the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI, Kings Conradin and Wenceslaus II, down through dukes, counts and knights, to the commoners. Most of the poems are Minnesang, but there are also other genres, including fables and didactic poems. The oldest poets represented in the manuscript had been dead for more than a century at the time of its compilations, while others were contemporaries, the latest even late additions of poems written during the early 14th century.

In the portraits, some of the nobles are shown in full armor in their heraldic colors and devices (therefore with their faces hidden), often shown as taking part in a joust, or sometimes in single combat with sword and shield, and sometimes in actual battle. Some images are motivated by the biography of the person depicted, but some designs just draw their motif from the poet's name (thus, Dietmar is shown riding a mule, since his name can be interpreted as meaning people's horse), while others draw on imagery from their lyrics (Walther von der Vogelweide is shown in a thoughtful pose which exactly matches the description of himself in one of his most famous songs).

The compilation of the codex was patronized by the Manesse family of Zürich, presumably by Rüdiger II Manesse (born before 1252, died after 1304). The house of Manesse declined in the late 14th century, selling their castle in 1393. The fate of the codex during the 15th century is unknown, but by the 1590s it had passed into possession of baron Johann Philipp of Hohensax (two of whose forebears are portrayed in the codex, on foll. 48v and 59v). In 1604, Melchior Goldast published excerpts of its didactic texts. After 1657 it was in the French royal library, from which it passed to the Bibliothèque Nationale, where the manuscript was studied by Jacob Grimm in 1815. In 1888, after long bargaining, it was sold to the Bibliotheca Palatina of Heidelberg, following a public subscription headed by William I and Otto von Bismarck.

The first critical editions of the Codex Manesse appeared in the early nineteenth century. The codex is frequently referred to by Minnesang scholars and in editions simply by the abbreviation C, introduced by Karl Lachmann, who used A and B for the two main earlier Minnesang codices (the Kleine Heidelberger Liederhandschrift and the Weingartner Liederhandschrift respectively). Two leaves of a 15th-century copy of the manuscript, called the Troßsche Fragment (Tross Fragment), were held in the Berlin State Library, but went missing in 1945.

== Project Overview ==
Etienne plans on first writing approximately 135 poems based on peers in Atlantia who have inspired him or taught him valuable lessons. The types of poetry will be a variety of different documentable pre-seventeenth century styles.

After the poetry is complete, Etienne plans on illuminating a page with each poem and including the individual's heraldry within the design. After the scribal portion is complete, the works will be bound into a book with the poems in the order of precedence of the individuals at the time of binding.

Some images are motivated by the biography of the person depicted, but some designs just draw their motif from the poet's name (thus, Dietmar is shown riding a mule, since his name can be interpreted as meaning people's horse), while others draw on imagery from their lyrics (Walther von der Vogelweide is shown in a thoughtful pose which exactly matches the description of himself in one of his most famous songs).

The compilation of the codex was patronized by the Manesse family of Zürich, presumably by Rüdiger II Manesse (born before 1252, died after 1304). The house of Manesse declined in the late 14th century, selling their castle in 1393. The fate of the codex during the 15th century is unknown, but by the 1590s it had passed into possession of baron Johann Philipp of Hohensax (two of whose forebears are portrayed in the codex, on foll. 48v and 59v). In 1604, Melchior Goldast published excerpts of its didactic texts. After 1657 it was in the French royal library, from which it passed to the Bibliothèque Nationale, where the manuscript was studied by Jacob Grimm in 1815. In 1888, after long bargaining, it was sold to the Bibliotheca Palatina of Heidelberg, following a public subscription headed by William I and Otto von Bismarck.

The first critical editions of the Codex Manesse appeared in the early nineteenth century. The codex is frequently referred to by Minnesang scholars and in editions simply by the abbreviation C, introduced by Karl Lachmann, who used A and B for the two main earlier Minnesang codices (the Kleine Heidelberger Liederhandschrift and the Weingartner Liederhandschrift respectively). Two leaves of a 15th-century copy of the manuscript, called the Troßsche Fragment (Tross Fragment), were held in the Berlin State Library, but went missing in 1945.

== Project Overview ==
Etienne plans on first writing approximately 135 poems based on individuals in Atlantia who have inspired him or taught him valuable lessons. The types of poetry will be a variety of different documentable pre-seventeenth century styles.

After the poetry is complete, Etienne plans on illuminating a page with each poem and including the individual's heraldry within the design. After the scribal portion is complete, the works will be bound into a book with the poems in the order of precedence of the individuals at the time of binding.

== Introduction ==
Mécène Etienne Le Mons d'Anjou, OP, resides in the [[Shire of Border Vale Keep]], and participates in the [[Barony of Nottinghill Coill]] in the [[Kingdom of Atlantia]]. He also spent many years living in the [[Barony of the Sacred Stone]] and still remembers those lands with warm regards, often thinking of them as his homelands.

Mécène Etienne is a Frenchman residing in the province Anjou near the river, Loire. Etienne is descended from Good King René d'Anjou and models himself after René by taking the moniker of "Mécène", meaning patron (of the arts), which was often used by René. For Etienne, the year is about 1570 A.D.

Etienne was born in 1522 in Ais de Prouvènço, a city and commune in southern France about 30 km (20 mi) north of Marseille. Ais de Prouvènço is in a plain overlooking the Arc river, about 1.5 kilometres (1 mi) from the right bank of the river. The city slopes gently from north to south and the Montagne Sainte-Victoire can easily be seen to the east. Ais' position in the south of France gives it a warm climate, though more extreme than Marseille due to the inland location. It has an average January temperature of 6 °C (43 °F) and a July average of 24 °C (75 °F). It has an average of 300 days of sunshine and only 91 days of rain. While it is partially protected from the Mistral, Ais still occasionally experiences the cooler and gusty conditions it brings. Like most of the south of France, Ais de Prouvènço has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) .

Ais (Aquae Sextiae) was founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, who gave his name to its springs, following the destruction of the nearby Gallic oppidum at Entremont. In 102 BC its vicinity was the scene of the Battle of Aquae Sextiae, where the Romans under Gaius Marius defeated the Ambrones and Teutones, with mass suicides among the captured women, which passed into Roman legends of Germanic heroism. In the 4th century AD it became the metropolis of Narbonensis Secunda. It was occupied by the Visigoths in 477. In the succeeding century, the town was repeatedly plundered by the Franks and Lombards, and was occupied by the Saracens in 731 and by Charles Martel in 737. Aix, which during the Middle Ages was the capital of Provence, did not reach its zenith until after the 12th century, when, under the houses of Barcelona/Aragon and Anjou, it became an artistic centre and seat of learning. Aix passed to the crown of France with the rest of Provence in 1487, and in 1501 Louis XII established there the parliament of Provence, which existed until 1789.

Etienne was born into the nobility and was well-educated as fitting his station. He also inherited several vineyards of Muscat grapes and a winery in Provença-Alps-Còsta d'Azur near his birth home, Ais de Prouvènço. The wine is where much of his continued incomes comes from, along with other generational wealth.

== Heraldry ==
Heraldry has been one of the primary interests in the SCA for Etienne since 2011. While his focus started in armory submissions, he has expanded his knowledge and education into the areas of onomastics, voice heraldry, protocol and ceremony, as well as more administrative areas of heraldry. He has held several deputy positions, including both Canton and Baronial levels, as well as Laurel-level LoAR proofreading. For the Kingdom of Atlantia, he has served as Vexillum (commentary), Sea Stag (education), and is currently Nereid (Emergency Deputy for Triton). His current projects include forming a process for the electronic submissions of armory and names in Atlantia as well as the acceptance of electronic payments by the College of Heralds of Atlantia.

Etienne has also rendered over 3000 pieces of SCA heraldry for various groups and individuals.

*Etienne's name was registered as Eʃtienne Le Mons d'Anjou in August of 2011 (via Atlantia).
*Etienne's device is: Argent, on a fleur-de-lys vert two annulets interlaced in fess argent. This was registered in May of 2013 (via Atlantia).
*Etienne's badge is: (Fieldless) A fleur-de-lys bendwise vert. This was registered in April of 2015 (via Atlantia).

Mécène means patron (of the arts) and is derived from Mécène (“Maecenas”), a Roman advisor (70 B.C.E. – 8 B.C.E.) and important patron for the Augustan poets. It was also used in reference to René of Anjou (sometimes referred to as René le mécène).

The [[Order]] of the Rose is reserved to those who have successfully completed one [[reign]] as [[consort]]. Its members, referred to as '''Companions of the Rose''' are by definition also [[peer#Royal Peer|Royal Peers]] and therefore use the title appropriate to their station (i.e "[[Grace]]", or "[[Excellency]]").

==History==
The Order of the Rose is a [[Society]] wide order. The Order was founded on January 6, 1968 (A.S. II) at Twelfth Night by Queen Sheryl of Thespis (now known as Countess Amina Sherana de Talavera) and King William the Silent to honor those who had been Queen or who had been the lady to a fighter who had won one of the first tourneys when there were no queens.

The governance and precedence varies from [[kingdom]] to kingdom. In the Kingdom of Atlantia, the Order of the Rose does not convey a [[Patent of Arms]] to the recipient.

==Ceremony==
When a consort steps down after thier first reign, they are inducted into the Order of the Rose. This is usually done with those Roses who are present coming forward to greet the new member and present her with roses.

Society wide, Roses are know to sponsor events knows as Rose Tournaments to encourage the display of [[Chivalric Virtues|chivalry]], [[Chivalric Virtues|courtesy]], and [[prowess]]. The format varies, but all combatants must be sponsored by a Rose.
